When your boiler suddenly stops working, it can be stressful, especially during colder months. Many modern boilers are designed to lock out as a safety feature when they detect a problem, and in most cases, a simple reset can get things running again. Before you call for help, it’s worth knowing how to reset your boiler safely and what steps to take if it doesn’t resolve the issue.

How to Safely Reset a Boiler

Locate the Reset Button

Start by finding your boiler’s control panel, which is usually positioned on the front of the unit. The reset button may be clearly marked with the word “reset” or displayed as a circular arrow symbol. Some newer boilers have a digital screen where the reset function can be accessed through the on-screen menu. If you’re unsure where to find it, refer to your boiler’s user manual for guidance. It will usually show the exact location and appearance of the button for your specific model. Taking a moment to check this ensures you don’t press the wrong control, which could interrupt the boiler’s safety system.

Press and Hold the Button

Once you’ve located the reset button, press and hold it firmly for around 5 to 10 seconds. You may notice the display lights flashing or hear a faint click as the boiler begins to restart. Every boiler model works slightly differently, so check the manufacturer’s recommendations to confirm the correct hold time. Avoid pressing the button multiple times in quick succession, as this can interrupt the process and prevent the system from resetting properly. When done correctly, this step prompts the boiler to clear the error and attempt to relight.

Wait for the System to Reboot

After you’ve released the button, give the boiler a few minutes to complete its reboot. During this time, the system will carry out internal safety checks, reignite the burner, and gradually return to its normal heating cycle. You may hear quiet humming or clicking sounds as the boiler restarts. Watch the indicator lights or screen display closely; a steady green or blue light usually signals that the reset has worked and the boiler is back in operation. If your heating and hot water begin to flow again, the reset has been successful.

Check for Recurring Faults

Once the boiler is running again, observe its performance for a few minutes to ensure everything is working as expected. If the fault code appears again, the boiler cuts out, or the flame indicator fails to return, this points to a deeper issue. Avoid continuously pressing the reset button, as repeated attempts can worsen the fault or hide a safety problem. Instead, call a qualified Gas Safe registered engineer who can safely inspect the system and diagnose the root cause, whether it’s low pressure, a blocked condensate pipe, or a failed component. Regular professional servicing can also help prevent these issues from recurring.

Common Reasons a Boiler May Need Resetting

  • Low water pressure caused by leaks or radiator bleeding
  • Power cuts or electrical surges that interrupt normal function
  • Blocked or frozen condensate pipe, particularly in winter
  • Faulty sensors or ignition issues that require professional repair

Resetting your boiler should never be a repeated fix. If your system keeps locking out or showing the same fault code, it’s best to arrange a professional inspection. Continuing to reset could mask an underlying issue that leads to further damage or safety risks.
